God has no grandchildren

August 02, 2024

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. -Ephesians 3:14-19

If you’ve been on the Bible Bus for a while you’ve likely heard Dr. McGee say, “God has no grandchildren.” Meaning, you can’t ride on someone else’s coattails into heaven. That’s also the message we hear from Kevin, a young man in Mexico. He shares:

“Thank you very much for all the work that God has done through you. It has been a great blessing for me to be edified in Christ Jesus. Even when I was raised in a Christian cradle, it is necessary for me to make a personal commitment to God so He can make me grow in His love and truth, and so I can be obedient to His Word. Thank you for helping me to know Him better and to follow Him.”

It’s true we can only have a direct relationship with God; we’re not connected to Him through our parents or spouses or anyone else. Today as we pray for all those growing up in what Kevin calls “a Christian cradle,” let’s begin with Ephesians 3:14-19:

Father, thank You for Your grace in our lives and for those on the Bible Bus who actively look for ways to share it with their children and grandchildren. Open our understanding to the width, length, depth, and height of Your love. Help our children, no matter their age, to know that You love them. Give them security and an identity rooted in a relationship with You. Give them the strength to walk with You each day and glorify You in all they do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Is something keeping you from a closer relationship with God? Jakov in Croatia can relate. Hear his story on Monday as we begin a weeklong prayer journey through southern Europe.
